OR THE FLU?
MANY VIRUSES SPREAD during the winter
months. The common cold and influenza, or
the flu, are both caused by viruses and are
alike in many ways. However, there are ways
to tell the difference:
»» If sickness comes on quick, flu is more
likely. “People who have the flu say they feel
like they were hit by a bus,” says Timothy
Longaker, MD, Medical Director of Urgent
Care, Navicent Health. “Symptoms can start
within hours of infection. A cold typically
starts small and builds for a few days.”
»» If you have no or only a low fever, it’s
probably a cold. “Colds may cause a
fever of about 100 degrees Fahrenheit,”
Dr. Longaker says. “However, the flu can
cause temperatures to rise to 102 degrees
or higher.”
»» If you are extremely tired, you probably
have the flu. Dr. Longaker notes that body
aches and fatigue are hallmark symptoms
of the flu.
