3D Mammography
One of the latest and most advanced weapons in the war on breast cancer is
3D mammography, a tool that provides a more accurate image for the early
detection of breast cancer. Committed to protecting women and their health,
Navicent Health introduced this technology to the region in 2016. The
advanced 3D mammography provides greater accuracy for earlier and easier
detection of cancer cells, improving breast cancer detection by up to 50 percent.
The technology also reduces the risk of false positives by up to 40 percent.
Implantable Cardioverter Defibrillator (ICD)/Cardiac
Resynchornization Therapy Defibrillators (CRT-Ds)
The Medical Center, Navicent Health (MCNH) now offers patients the first
implantable cardioverter defibrillator (ICD) system, as well as the first and
only cardiac resynchronization therapy defibrillators (CRT-Ds), approved by
the FDA for use with magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scans. In the past,
patients with CRT-Ds and ICDs have not been able to receive MRI scans
because of potential harmful interaction between the MRI and the device. With
as many as 40 percent of CRT patients and up to one-third of ICD patients
needing an MRI within four years of receiving a device, thousands of patients
implanted with CRT-Ds have not had access to MRI scans when they needed
them. Patients being treated for heart failure with these new MR-conditional
CRT-D devices will no longer be denied access to MRI scans, which can
be critical for doctors to detect and treat other underlying, potentially life-
threatening conditions. The heart team at MCNH is excited to lead the way in
improving care for heart failure patients.
Mobile MRI Coach
In June, Navicent Health introduced the newest tool in its diagnostics arsenal
– a new mobile MRI coach equipped with GE’s 1.5 T MRI System. The new
coach will allow Navicent Health to provide state-of-the-art diagnostic testing
in rural areas, bringing the testing to the patient rather than having the patient within central Georgia’s patient population, and has successfully supports care
travel for the test. Navicent Health has initially deployed the mobile coach to
critical access hospitals including Medical Center of Peach County, Navicent
Health and Putnam General Hospital, Navicent Health Partner. The health
system plans to partner with other healthcare providers to add additional
locations.
Navicent Health Police Department
Navicent Health Police Department (NHPD) purchased new radio technology
to allow for more seamless coordination between NHPD and Macon-Bibb
County emergency responders. The full-spectrum multiband radios, technology
will allow direct communication between NHPD and all other Macon-Bibb
County emergency response agencies in the event of a crisis situation for the
mutual benefit of all agencies, permitting seamless public safety interoperability
for the improved safety of the community and emergency personnel.
Pediatric Telemedicine Clinic
In May, Children’s Hospital, Navicent Health (CHNH) and Tift Regional
Medical Center (TRMC) in Tifton, Ga. celebrated the 100th pediatric
gastroenterology patient treated through their pediatric telemedicine clinic.
CHNH and TRMC announced their partnership with Georgia Partnership
for Telehealth (GPT), a nonprofit organization promoting the establishment
of telemedicine programs in communities throughout Georgia, in August
2015, seeing the first patient at the clinic on August 28, 2015. The partnership
benefits families living in rural areas of south Georgia who no longer need to
travel to Macon for physician appointments with CHNH’s numerous pediatric,
pediatric gastroenterology and pediatric endocrinology specialists. Instead,
the patients may travel the much shorter distance to Tifton and – through
telemedicine – be seen by the Macon specialists at TRMC. By allowing patients
to be treated closer to home, patients are not required to miss days of school,
and parents or caregivers are not forced to miss a day of work while incurring
travel expenses.
Rehabilitation Hospital, Navicent Health
Rehabilitation Hospital, Navicent Health now offers Biofeedback, a therapy
treatment method for patients with pelvic floor dysfunction, including urinary
and fecal incontinence and pelvic pain. The Biofeedback system assesses muscle
activity and provides both patient and therapist with visual and auditory
feedback, allowing patients to increase their self-awareness and learn to use
pelvic floor muscles properly, and allowing therapists to assist the patient with
individualized therapies to prevent pelvic pain and incontinence.
Specialists On Call, Inc.
Specialists On Call, Inc. (SOC), the nation’s leading provider of clinical
telemedicine services to acute care hospitals, celebrated a milestone 50,000
psychiatry consultations delivered to patients across the United States. The
patient was under the care of SOC partner hospital The Medical Center,
Navicent Health on June 20, 2016 when an SOC psychiatrist was requested
to support the patient’s care via telemedicine. The partnership between SOC
and Navicent Health allows for better management of behavioral health needs
delivery to an average of 300 patients per year.
